The Emergency Medical Responder Class (EMR)

This Emergency Medical Responder EMR course teaches applicants to become effective entry-level medical professionals who prepare patients for industrial, pre-hospital, first-responder settings. In fact, PHSA’s EMR program provides students with the hands-on skills and knowledge they need to manage medical and trauma-related emergencies until EMTs or paramedics arrive.

Upon course completion, students will be able to continue their education towards national certification as emergency medical responders through the National Registry of EMTs. The PHSA emergency medical responder course also meets and exceeds the National Standard Curriculum for Emergency Medical Responder developed by the United States Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Emergency Medical Responder Class Applicant Requirements:

  • 18 years of age by course completion
  • No criminal convictions
  • Good moral character and strong motivation to serve
  • Satisfy ORC 4765-12-07 requirements (Scope of Practice)
  • High School Diploma or GED

The complete EMR course time is roughly 66 hours of didactic instruction. During this time, you will take part in 28 lessons developed by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Furthermore, PHSA combined their American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course into the EMR. As a result, you receive all the knowledge and skills you need to be an effective first responder.
